What is Whey Protein?
Whey protein is a by-product of the cheese production process and is extracted from milk when liquid whey separates from casein (also known as the curd). Whey protein is a rich source of the amino acids required by the body for repairing cells, muscles and bones and is also an energy source.
The purest product is known as whey protein isolate and this is used in protein powder products. A more easily digestible form is hydrolyzed whey protein frequently found in body building supplements. Body builders may require up to 2 grams of protein for each kg in body weight every day. Hydrolyzed whey protein provides a concentrated source of branched chain amino acids which are required for rebuilding muscle tissue following exercise and weight training.
What does Whey Protein Do?
Whey proteins have also been shown to decrease the appetite and promote weight loss. Eating more high quality protein has been shown to increase the levels of the amino acid leucine helping reduce body fat while maintaining muscle mass. The alpha-lactalbumin found in whey protein has also been proven to help serotonin levels in people suffering from stress. Certain whey protein powder supplements appear to lower blood pressure in some subjects.
